Snowshoe Hare (Lepus americanus)
The Snowshoe Hare can run up to 27 mph and jump 10 feet in one hop, being an expert at escaping predators like the wolf, bobcat, or lynx. Furthermore, they are good swimmers and will jump in the water to make an escape.
The hare has large rear feet and toes that can spread out to act like snowshoes. Their feet additionally have fur on the bottom, which will protect them from the cold and give them traction in the snow.
To help hide from predators, during the summer months, the Snowshoe Hare's fur is a rusty grayish brown, but turns pure white in the winter. Large ears help the hare gather sounds from many directions, allowing it to have a keen sense of hearing; large hind feet help it stand up and reach branches to feed on.
