Paper Birch (Betula papyrifera)
Birch trees can grow in pairs or clusters. There are
many different types of birch trees and they all grow fairly tall. Both
the sweet and paper birch can grow anywhere from sixty to eighty feet
high.
The Paper Birch grows up to 60-90 feet tall. The leaves have serrated edges and are pelvis shaped, being wider at the petiole and becoming narrower and sharply pointed at the tip.
This tree grows in the taiga of Canada, as far as the tundra. It also grows in the deciduous forest as far as the Appalachian Mountains. It has extremely thin bark that peels as thin as a sheet of paper.
The inner bark of the paper birch contains oils that can be used for medicine. One teaspoon of this oil is
equal to one aspirin. The bark of this tree is good for making sturdy canoes as well as baskets.
